The Perfect Summer Photo Session At San Dieguito Park

If you ask me where the best location for family photos in San Diego is, I’ll probably tell you without hesitation: San Dieguito Park. It’s my absolute favorite spot to photograph families. No matter the season, it always delivers. Spring brings soft wildflowers, fall gives us the warm tones everyone loves, and all year round it offers lush greens, big open skies, and plenty of space to spread out—which means you’re rarely sharing the background with a crowd.

For this summer evening session, I got to work with one of my long-time clients, Mandy. She booked a storytelling session, and I loved how intentional she was about planning a session that reflected her family in this moment. These sessions are truly a collaboration—there’s a bit of brainstorming, some logistical effort, and a shared vision that comes to life on session day. Mandy understood the assignment completely.

Her family—Mandy, her husband, their two girls, and their sweet pup Buddy—made the most of the evening. They started by flying kites, then borrowed bubbles from another generous park-goer. From there, they shared watermelon, played, and wrapped up with a quiet painting session on canvases as the sun dipped behind the trees.

It felt joyful and relaxed—exactly what I hope for in every storytelling session. Real connection, movement, and space to just be together.

San Dieguito Park truly was the best location for family photos in San Diego that evening. The light, the space, the trees—everything was perfect.
