There’s something really special about documenting milestones for long-time clients. I’ve photographed Caitie, Nick, and their son Royal so many times over the years, and it’s been an honor to watch their family grow. For this session, we met up at Swami’s Beach in Encinitas to capture their San Diego maternity photos as they prepare to welcome their rainbow baby girl.

This shoot was especially meaningful because Caitie and Nick have been on a long journey to expand their family. Now, they’re six months along, and celebrating this moment felt especially sweet. We started their San Diego maternity photos with a few classic portraits, capturing the love and anticipation between them. Then, they brought out a canvas and paint to create something together on the sand—something playful and personal.

They ended the session eating cupcakes by the ocean, just soaking in the moment as the sun dipped lower. It was one of those evenings where everything felt laid-back and effortless, which always makes for the best photos. The final images are some of my favorites I’ve ever taken of them—full of joy, creativity, and genuine connection.

San Diego maternity photos don’t always have to be about standing and posing in pretty outfits. Adding in something fun or creative makes the experience feel so much more personal. Whether it’s painting, playing music, or just bringing your favorite snacks to enjoy together, those moments always translate so beautifully on camera.
