San Diego in the fall is a perfect setting for family photos—the warmth of the golden-hour light, leaves just barely beginning to change, and enough variety in locations to make each shoot feel unique. As a family photographer in North County, I’ve found a few favorite spots that bring out the best in every season, and this fall is no exception. Here are some top locations for fall family photos in San Diego.
For families who love a natural backdrop, Batiquitos Lagoon Trail offers coastal charm mixed with soft, organic scenery. The paths here are lined with subtle greenery, tall grass, and glimpses of the lagoon, making it ideal for those looking to keep the focus on the family with just a touch of nature in the background—a great combo for laid-back, candid shots.
San Dieguito County Park has wide-open spaces, tall trees, and that rustic vibe that brings a subtle autumn feel without being overly “fall.” This location offers plenty of room for the littles to roam while still feeling tucked into nature. The lighting here at sunset adds a beautiful warmth to every shot.
For those who love the beach, Ponto in Carlsbad offers a different side of coastal San Diego. It’s less crowded than some of the other beaches, giving families plenty of space to play. Fall light over the ocean is like no other—so soft and hazy!
If you’re after golden fields, winding trails, and the chance to have a bit more adventure, Los Peñasquitos Canyon is an amazing spot. Perfect for families who love that earthy, slightly rustic look, this location gives off quiet charm and endless space to explore.
Not going to lie, this spot is CROWDED as it’s a fan favorite, but there’s lots of room to explore and still get great shots because it’s a large location with lots of beautiful spots. Check out the photos below from a recent fall family session I did there!
Choosing a location that reflects your family’s style brings out the authenticity in your photos. San Diego has no shortage of stunning places to capture those moments—every family, every season, and every location adds its own story.
