Oceanside harbor family photos were always on my location wish list, and this session with Anna and her family is exactly why. Anna is a longtime client — I’ve had the privilege of photographing her through different seasons of motherhood, starting when Mila was little, and now with both kiddos and her husband all together. Getting to watch a family grow over the years is one of my favorite parts of this work, and this session was a really good reminder of that.

They brought their dog, which was the right call. He showed up in probably a third of the gallery and honestly made every shot better.

We started at the harbor — moving through the grass, along the docks, in front of the sailboats — and the variety of backdrops you get just from that one location is so ideal! The kids were full of energy, dad was game for anything, and Anna was as easy to photograph as she always is. Since we’ve worked together enough times, the whole session was easy peasy — they were just being themselves, and it showed.

The second half of the session we moved down to the sand, and that’s when the sky decided to do something incredible. We’d been a little nervous about the May grey all week, but instead of flat grey light we got this dramatic, moody, colorful sunset — deep pink and orange burning under a heavy cloud cover — that made the beach shots look almost cinematic. The wide shots of the whole family on the sand with that sky behind them, the dog running loose, the toddler doing her thing — ah I just love them all!!!

Oceanside Harbor is one of the most underutilized family photo locations in North County San Diego. If you want something that feels different from a standard beach session — more texture, more variety, more of that lived-in coastal character — it’s worth considering.
