Family photos in Carlsbad hit differently when they’re taken at a place that already means something.

Chloe’s family has been coming to this beach house since she was a kid. Every summer, same place. Now she’s here with her own family — her husband, and three kids five and under — carrying that tradition forward without even having to think about it. That’s the kind of thing you don’t fully appreciate until you’re the one doing it.

They’ve been together nearly a decade, which shows. There’s an ease between them that you can’t manufacture and can’t direct — it’s just there, and it made my job very easy. The kids were wild and hilarious and completely themselves, which is the best possible thing for a session like this. We started inside, in that warm golden living room with the ocean peeking through the windows, moved through the house and out to the patio, and finished on the beach at golden hour with that sunset doing everything it was supposed to do.

The beach shots especially — dad tossing the kids in the air against that sunset, all of them walking the shoreline together, the little ones losing their minds near the waves — those are the images that are going to matter in thirty years.
