Family Photos at Torrey Pines

Family photos at Torrey Pines State Beach are always a good idea, and this session is a perfect example of why. Kelsey reached out just a few weeks before her family’s cross-country move, wanting to document their last days on the West Coast before they left San Diego behind. A last-minute session, a stunning location, and one of the sweetest families I’ve had the pleasure of photographing.

I’m completely in love with this gallery — and a big part of why is because this family just got it. They showed up, let the afternoon unfold, and genuinely had a good time together. Which brings me to something I talk about a lot, because it really does make or break a session.

Toddlers are not known for their cooperation during photo shoots. As a toddler mom myself, I can say with full confidence that I would never expect my two-year-old to stand still and smile at a stranger with a camera. It’s just not how they work. So when families come in expecting that, and then get frustrated when it doesn’t happen, the tension shows up in every frame.

This family did the opposite. Their older kid had his own agenda — because of course he did, he’s a toddler at the beach — and they just rolled with it. They played with him, chased him, kissed each other, and at one point stopped for pizza from their favorite spot, which is honestly peak San Diego. He got completely soaked at the end. Nobody minded. The result is a gallery that feels exactly like them — relaxed, happy, and real.

The best thing you can do during a family session is follow your kid’s lead and actually enjoy each other. Let them be in charge of the energy. Bring snacks, bring a treat for some gentle bribery if you need it, and stop worrying about whether everyone is looking at the camera. The more fun you’re having, the better the photos will be. That’s not just a nice thing to say — it’s genuinely how it works.

Torrey Pines is one of my favorite San Diego locations for exactly this kind of session. The cliffs, the beach, the golden late-afternoon light — it gives every family something beautiful to come home to, regardless of how compliant the toddler was. You can learn more about Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve if you’re scoping it out as a location.

This family is off to their next adventure on the East Coast, and I’m so glad we got these before they went. These are the photos they’re going to pull up when they’re missing California.

If you’re looking to document your own family before a big life change — or just because — let’s connect.
