When Tara Mackey reached out for me to photograph her Joshua Tree Elopement, I was soooooo excited. If you aren’t familiar with Tara, she is an inspiration, a spiritual woman, a business owner, a singer, writer, model – A force of nature if you will. You can learn more about her on her blog here.
Tara and her fiance Andrew, spend most of their time growing in their careers, surfing and meditating at the beach, and volunteering at an orphanage down in Mexico. Already aligned with their values, I was thrilled to be able to document this super special and intimate boho elopement in Joshua Tree.
I met up with them and their two great friends at a cute little Air BnB in Joshua Tree. The home was filled with good energy and smelled of sage and essential oils. We took a few getting ready photos, and the simplicity of Tara’s wedding attire was what made it all the more beautiful. She dressed in a beautiful white dress that if I recall correctly she bought for $23 at a thrift store. Her friend Sarah put together her florals. Tara wore a floral headpiece, a beautiful necklace, some beaded earrings, a turquoise dangling anklet, and had beautiful henna tattoos covering her hands. An actual goddess.
Tara and Andrew had a precious first look along the side of the house where there was some shade cover, as it was the middle of June and a really gloriously sunny day out in the desert. Their love for each other was so calm, yet passionate. Deeper than the ocean.
We headed out to their ceremony location at Garth’s Boulder Garden – The land of 10,000 stories. I strongly recommend checking out the link above because the location was really something else. Super special indeed. We drove and drove for what seemed like forever until we reached our parking location, from where we took a long walk to their ceremony spot. We stopped in Garth’s living quarters, where one of the men played a beautiful song for Tara and Andrew on the piano. The music echoed throughout the entire desert and continued throughout the evening. It was amazing.
Tara, Andrew, and their friends held a sacred sage cleansing ceremony, followed by a beautiful ritual which resonated deeply with their relationship. As the sun started to set, we moved over to the spot where they would say their vows, and commit their lives to one another forever.
Tara and Andrew’s elopement was that out of a dream. It was sort of ethereal. I was so grateful to be able to be a witness of their union, and to have documented their beautiful love story.
