If you’ve been searching for the best location for maternity photos in San Diego, I want to introduce you to Los Peñasquitos Ranch House — and specifically what it looked like on a late spring evening with Alison, Matt, and their baby girl on the way.
Alison is a long-time friend, which meant we could skip the warm-up and just get into it. She came with a clear vision: tall grass, open land, something organic and timeless. No trends, nothing overdone. That’s a vision I can fall in love with!
Late spring at Los Peñasquitos is something else. The grass was tall and golden, the hills and tree line filled out the background, and the light was soft without being flat. Alison wore a white eyelet top and loose jeans, with a chunky cream cardigan for the more intimate shots. Matt matched her energy in a cream polo. They brought a wicker basket and white florals — simple and considered.
We shot throughout the field, got some shots of them together in the grass, and created some images that I’m genuinely obsessed with. The whole first half of this session has this quiet, unhurried quality that I think comes through in every frame.
As the sun dropped, we moved toward the ranch fence and everything shifted. The light went warm and golden, Alison swapped into her white tiered skirt, Matt put on his cowboy boots, and suddenly the session had a completely different feel. Still classic, still them — just with a little more grit and a lot more warmth.
The western influence wasn’t heavy. It was just the fence, the boots, the dried grass catching the last of the light. We walked the open field, got some wide shots of them against the sky, and finished with some close details — hands, the bump, the kind of stuff that’s easy to overlook in the moment but hits different later.
It gives you a lot of range in one location. The tall grass fields, the open pastures, the white ranch fence, the treeline — you can move through several completely different looks without going anywhere. And it doesn’t feel like a typical San Diego session. If you want something with a little more texture and character than a standard beach shoot, this place delivers.
Alison’s baby girl has since arrived, happy and healthy, and I’m really glad we have these to look back on. That in-between season — right before everything changes — is worth documenting. These photos are only going to get more meaningful over time.
